Two years ago when Ian MacHattie began importing distiller’s grain from American ethanol plants and brewers waste for farm feeds he got an idea. Why not operate a small ethanol plant at his feed mill near Truro? "It is a perfect fit for what we do here," says the co-owner of L & M Feeds. His elevator operation burns $100,000 of propane annually for its grain dryer and soybean roaster. As transportation and other costs are also increasing, MacHattie approached ACOA for financial aid to do a feasibility study to see if he could make ethanol at his feed mill.

Opponents of a proposed wind farm along the Gulf Shore are strongly considering appealing their case to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. “It’s something we’re giving strong consideration to,” Lisa Betts of the Gulf Shore Association said Tuesday. “It’s one of the options we’re looking at.” Betts said the developer, Atlantic Wind Power Corporation, seems determined to build a wind farm with between 20 to 27 turbines and her group does not feel Cumberland County’s land-use bylaw offers enough protection for nearby residents.

The Nova Scotia side of the Tantramar Marsh and other parts of Cumberland County may be ideally suited for the creation of wind farms, says a researcher from the University of Moncton. Yves Gagnon, who was recently hired by the Nova Scotia government, to draw up a wind map of the province said a similar study in New Brunswick revealed favourable conditions on the Tantramar Marsh near the Nova Scotia border. “There are some good winds in that region, but we really haven’t studied the Nova Scotia side yet,” Gagnon said. “Judging from what we found on the New Brunswick side, we’re pretty sure we’ll find favourable conditions on that side as well.”

IN THE RETAIL business, the store that attracts the most customers has achieved one of the keys to success.
The three Home Depot stores in Nova Scotia found a way to pump up customer traffic recently by teaming up with the provincial government to hand out free fluorescent light bulbs this week, ending when the stores close on Sunday.

Even though Cumberland County’s wind farm bylaw will allow his project to move ahead, the president of Atlantic Wind Power still wants to work with Gulf Shore residents. “I think it’s a fair and reasonable bylaw,” Charles Demond said Thursday. “Regardless of the bylaw, we want to continue to work with the community and address sensible concerns. That was our commitment from day one.”

Cumberland County is moving ahead with a wind farm bylaw that will set the minimum distance between wind turbines and nearby residences at 500 metres or three times the tower height, which ever is greater. “As far as I’m concerned it’s a good compromise,” Warden Keith Hunter said following council’s May meeting on Wednesday. “Rather than have no regulations, we at least have some regulations. They may be disappointed on the Gulf Shore that we have a 500-metre setback but they should be happy we have a 500-metre setback rather than no setback.”
