Wind turbines created a constant hum in the background as dignitaries sat under canvas on a wind and rainswept headland for Friday’s official commissioning of the Glace Bay Wind Farm. Nine units dot the coastline near the NSPI Lingan generating station, producing 42 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, enough energy to power about 6,000 homes. Cape Breton Wind Power Ltd. CFO Luciano Lisi described the company’s efforts as a small but important step toward integrating renewable energy into the existing mix of power generation. The wind farm was also completed on budget and on time, he added.

Plans are underway to erect up to 22 wind turbines on Nuttby Mountain. “We’re well through most of the permitting process,” Cobequid Area Wind Farms Inc., co-owner Clare Peers told Colchester County Council this week. The company is in the process of completing an environmental assessment, which includes public consultation. If approved, the project is expected to cost from $70 million and $90 million and will see between 15 and 22 turbines erected just below the Nuttby fire and communications towers.

Many have voiced their displeasure with wind farms being set up in this area, but 3G Energy Corp.’s vice president of operations Graham Findlay said people shouldn’t be so quick to judge. "People think they’re in some way damaging by sending out sound," Findlay said Wednesday in Rodney. "Try them out. Get used to them. Hang around them. People will get used to them." 3G held public information sessions in Rodney on Wednesday and Westchester on Thursday to let locals know what’s involved in their proposals for more wind turbines at their wind farms in Rodney and Higgins Mountain.

The head of a citizens group fighting a proposed wind farm in the Gulf Shore area is asking the province to stop the project until its safety can be proven. “Please err on the side of caution and call a moratorium of all wind power developments that are any closer than two kilometres of a residence until independent and government research has been done to establish the safe and healthy distance from a turbine people should be living,” Lisa Betts said in a letter to Premier Rodney MacDonald.
