Province turning to wind power, major project possible in this region

At least one new project—involving 20 turbines—may be in the works, according to Municipality of Digby warden Jim Thurber, who said last week he believes an application was submitted to Nova Scotia Power, which had asked for participants in a 130-megawatt province-wide program. Single turbines exist already outside Digby at Mt. Pleasant and at East Ferry, and there is a test tower near Gulliver’s Cove.

Pictou County to control wind farm development

A second rural municipality in northern Nova Scotia is chasing at its own wind power bylaw. The Municipality of Pictou County could soon be joining Cumberland County in enacting laws over the establishment of wind turbines. The county’s municipal council brings its draft land use bylaw - dealing specifically with wind turbines - to the table for a public hearing this evening. From there, a vote will take it quickly to second reading and adoption.

Cumberland County may be on the verge of being a hotbed for alternative energy with the development of its expansive geothermal, tidal and wind energy potential. To ensure the county takes full advantage of those potential opportunities, the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association (CREDA) is recruiting an energy office liaison to co-ordinate and manage the strategic development of alternate energy opportunities within the region.

Glace Bay Wind Farm commissioned

Wind turbines created a constant hum in the background as dignitaries sat under canvas on a wind and rainswept headland for Friday’s official commissioning of the Glace Bay Wind Farm. Nine units dot the coastline near the NSPI Lingan generating station, producing 42 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, enough energy to power about 6,000 homes. Cape Breton Wind Power Ltd. CFO Luciano Lisi described the company’s efforts as a small but important step toward integrating renewable energy into the existing mix of power generation. The wind farm was also completed on budget and on time, he added.

Company wants to put turbines on top of Nuttby

Plans are underway to erect up to 22 wind turbines on Nuttby Mountain. “We’re well through most of the permitting process,” Cobequid Area Wind Farms Inc., co-owner Clare Peers told Colchester County Council this week. The company is in the process of completing an environmental assessment, which includes public consultation. If approved, the project is expected to cost from $70 million and $90 million and will see between 15 and 22 turbines erected just below the Nuttby fire and communications towers.
