BIBLE HILL — If people in this community have concerns about the prospect of using Bay of Fundy tidal energy to create power, they weren’t talking Tuesday night.
No one showed up for the last of six public forums held by members of the Offshore Energy Environmental Research Association.
Lesley Griffiths, head of the strategic environmental assessment group for the research association, doesn’t read anything into the lack of attendance.
"We’ve been getting the feeling that people are really interested in this project and we’ve had an enormous amount of feedback," Ms. Griffiths said.
"Some of our meetings have been quite full. . . . Parrsboro, especially, was quite crowded and there was a lot of good discussions."
The public forums were being held to determine what concerns people in local communities have about potentially harnessing some of the 100 billion tonnes of water flowing daily in the Bay of Fundy.
The possibility of creating power from the energy of the tides appeals to those who hope to lessen society’s dependence on fossil fuels. It’s regarded as a so-called green alternative.
However, it was the job of the strategic environmental assessment process to determine what possible environmental concerns there might be and how to best address them...
